It’s About Helping the Downtrodden and Persecuted Reclaim Freedom
Passover-the festival of freedom and justice
The Exodus from Egypt occurs in every human being, in every era, in every year, and even every day. (Rabbi Nachman of Bratslav, 18th-century Chasidic leader)
Passover, or Pesach in Hebrew, commemorates the slavery of the Israelites in Egypt and their ultimate exodus to freedom. This story of redemption from slavery is the master story of the Jewish people, which has shaped Jewish consciousness and values. It is just as relevant today for all humankind as it was 3,400 years ago.
Pesach reflects many prevalent themes in Jewish history, including oppression and the yearning for freedom. Many understand and appreciate Passover, regardless of religious background, because the belief in justice for all is central to the holiday.
It’s about helping the downtrodden and persecuted find freedom. We remember that once Egyptians enslaved us and that now it’s our responsibility to help others in similar situations.
Passover lets us pause our lives and think differently for a moment. It allows us to connect with our ancestors and the people in our lives. Passover shows us the power that lies in the community. The holiday reminds us that we must look within to achieve true liberation, to liberate ourselves from our restraints.
The past few months have been difficult for many of us. Passover is the festival of freedom, yet many of us struggle to secure freedom due to war, relationships, mental health, and civil society.
